Originally brewed as a cream ale, Scona Gold took a hiatus from our line-up before being re-introduced in 2014 as a traditionally brewed Kölsch style ale. Kölsch is a German style, which is sometimes referred to as the lager of ales and our Scona Gold is no exception!
Voted Canada’s best craft beer of the year in 2015, Scona Gold Kölsch is a delightfully crisp and refreshing beer. This golden ale is sure to please; even the most die-hard lager drinkers will enjoy this treasure.

What is a Kölsch?
Kölsch is a style of lager-like beer originating from Cologne (Köln) Germany. This style is fermented cool using ale yeast and then cold-aged. Flavours are well balanced and often have a subtle fruitiness from the ale yeast, somewhat similar in flavour to pilsners.
The term Kölsch is protected by the Kölsch Konvention, with the aim of preventing foreign breweries from brewing faulty, fake or watered-down Kölsch. Only 20 breweries in the Köln area are allowed to use the name. The Kölsch Konvention defines the style as a light, highly attenuated, hop accentuated, clear, top fermenting ale.
